Remember: Poetry Reading in The Garden on February 12th!

A Second Sunday Showcase Event!

Our Three Poets, Jill Lurie, Orchid Black and Tatiana Sulovska, will be reading poetry in the garden, 2:00 to 3:30 PM.  Excellent poets in their own right, having the three of them on one stage is a delight not to be missed.

There is a $15 suggested donation, but no one will be turned away.  Come on out, hear the poetry, delight in the garden and be a part of the community of The Learning Garden.  It will be a gorgeous Southern California afternoon and you'll be so glad you made it out for this event!

Enter off Walgrove, we are the first gate south of Venice Blvd on Walgrove.

Hope to see you there!

February's Garden Events!

It has been unseasonably warm these last few days, but we are sure that will change.  I know for events and classes we all want to have these nice warm days, but the plants in the Garden are NOT happy.  Even though we want the warm sunny days for us (this last weekend was about as close to perfection for events and gardening that anyone could possibly desire!), the plants need cloudy, cool and, above all WET weather.  Here's what we have planned for February - let's hope it's in accord with Mother Nature!

Jill Lurie, Orchid Black, Tatiana Sulovska, clockwise from Left
February 11th - The Garden will be closed in the afternoon unless we have some volunteers maintain the hours.

February 12th - Garden hours subject to volunteer availability until about noon

February 12th - 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM - Three local poets – Jill Lurie, Orchid Black and Tatiana Sulovska – are coming together to read their own words of
love and nature-inspired verses for this Valentine’s Day-themed event. For a $15 suggested donation, guests will enjoy the beautiful garden setting, delicious treats and refreshments and a signed copy of Jill Lurie’s book of poems entitled “Ginger Roots: Plantings of a Future Dreamer.”

February 16th - noon to 5:00 PM - Garden will be closed.

February 18th - 9:00 to 1:00 PM Westside Produce Exchange - see their Facebook page to join up with these wonderful community builders! February 18th - 2:30 PM  Seed Library of Los Angeles (SLOLA), their February meeting - Albert Chang will report on what he learned at the Organic Seed Alliance on his ice-covered journey to the Organic Seed Growers Conference.

And don't forget, every Friday that the weather doesn't rain or blow the house down, we have a potluck on the picnic tables in the Garden, 12:30 to 2:30.  Bring a dish for about 12, and your own plate and service ware - while we have a few vegetarians, we also have meat eaters and omnivores a plenty!  Usually good conversation and eclectic people!

What To Do & When To Do It

You should take a class from this man!
...the workshop.  As opposed to the book.  As many folks know, Gardenmaster David King is writing a book called "Growing Food In Southern California; What To Do & When To Do It..."  This book is the result of teaching these classes for the last two years (we started the the classes in February 2010 - and he thought he'd have the book written by July... ha!)

So this is the continuing education series of these classes.  You get 2 hours of indepth gardening information, from some 50 years of experience and some advanced gardening techniques that probably rates as some of the most entertaining gardening classes you can take in Southern California!  Not only that, you are privvy to what will be in the book when it finally comes out!

What To Do And When To Do It:  Growing Food In Southern California (we reverse the title for the classes)
Always the FIRST Saturday of the Month (unless it's a holiday);
Always 10 to noon; $25 per one class, discount for multiple classes;
Always INFORMATIVE & ENTERTAINING;
Always hot tea and coffee (bring your own mug);&
Always your free monthly handout of gardening in Los Angeles!

Which is like nowhere else, and that's why you need this class!
